Yoga therapy

“The aim of Yoga Therapy is to promote good health for the person as a whole – the emphasis of this work may be towards the body, the mind, the emotions or a combination of these.”

The British Council for Yoga Therapy

What is yoga therapy?

Yoga Therapy differs from a regular yoga class, and is usually offered on an individual basis.

We are all unique, with our own health issues, personality, preferences and lifestyle. Yoga therapy considers the whole person when designing a personalised practice, or ‘yoga prescription’ – empowering you to take your own steps to improve or manage your health and well-being.

The Yoga Therapy process begins with the completion of a health form, dialogue and assessment. Yoga ‘tools’ are then carefully chosen and adapted for the individual, according to their needs, health and lifestyle. It is a client led approach, and the yoga therapist acts as facilitator to support the clients’ needs.

Is it right for me?

Yoga Therapy is a considered and individualised approach and is suitable for most;

whether you are already an experienced yoga practitioner, or coming to yoga for the very first time:

The yoga tools are applied and adapted to suit your own mobility, health needs, personality and preferences.

How do I get started?

The first step is to book a free 15 minute telephone consultation so you can have your questions about yoga therapy answered.

If it is right for you, then you can book your first 75 minute appointment which will include a chat about your health needs and personal goals, a yogic assessment, and a personalised practice that you can take away with you to do at home.

Follow-up sessions are recommended and are 60 minutes each.

More Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be flexible?

Yoga Therapy is about meeting you where you are. You can practice yoga lying down, standing up or in a chair. The choice is yours whether you are in a class or 1to1. You certainly don’t need to be flexible. Yoga is more about settling the mind than touching your toes!

Is there anything I need to bring?

You may wish to bring along your own yoga mat if you have one, otehrwise I can provide everything you need. Please remember to wear loose comfortable clothing to allow you to move the body easily.

Can I do yoga therapy on-line?

You can receive yoga therapy on-line, but depending on what you are working on, it may be helpful to meet you in person for the first session. For example, if you are coming for a hip issue, it is easier for me to see how your hip moves in-person.

In some cases, on-line may be preferable, for example, if you have a weakened immune system or your energy is low.

”CAN YOU NOT JUST RECOMMEND SOMETHING IN CLASS?

The session is completely tailored to you. As a yoga teacher and therapist, I often get asked ‘what can I do for this or that?’ My response is always ‘It depends’. Yoga classes provide general practices, but yoga therapy is more specific and targeted and therefore often much more effective. It takes into account all of health needs and lifestyle which is something that simply can’t be done in class. During a yoga therapy session, I can do a full assessment and check that any particular practice is comfortable and is having the desired effect.

Will I have to practice at home?

Research has shown that the benefits of yoga are most noticable with a shorter daily practice compared to a longer weekly practice. So if you can practice for just 5-10 minutes a day you will see more benefits. That said, it is your session, and if it isnt practical to practice every day then just do what you feel comfortable with.

How will I remember all the practices?

At the end of each yoga therapy session I will provide you with a copy of your practice. This might be a hand written practice, or by email, or may be in the form or a recording. This will depend on the practice given and your preferred way of being able to access it.

I’m still not sure it is for me?

Yoga and yoga therapy may not suit everyone, and it may be that you need something else. We can discuss this, and I may be able to recommend something different that might suit you better. This could be physio, acupuncture, reflexology, or joining an art club or choir. Its more important to find what you enjoy and is most beneficial for you.

Can I still attend a group yoga class?

Of course! Group classes are beneficial in other ways, including the oportunity to meet like minded people.

Therapy Experiences

I had been attending Jackie’s yoga for cancer class each week and been finding it really helpful and informative.  After asking Jackie a question about  a physical ailment I decided to try a block of 3 therapy yoga sessions to address the issue.  After a detailed assessment we ended up exploring different areas that I would never have anticipated! The sessions were not what I expected but through them Jackie gave me simple exercises that I could easily incorporate into my daily routine.  At first I thought how can these simple exercises help me ?! However, I did find them very supportive and I continue to incorporate them into my practise now.  I found the format of 3 sessions a good number and also appreciated the month or so in between each session so that I could get used to the exercises and text Jackie if I needed to clarify anything.  I would definitely return for some 1-1 sessions if I felt I needed the extra support..”
